MASERATI MISTRAL SPYDER 3.5

Splendid and rare Maserati Mistral Spyder first series, 1 of 12 early series

A rare masterpiece of special elegance, the Maserati 3500 with original Maserati Hardtop!

The Maserati Mistral Spyder 3500 GT offered here, or Mistral Spider as some call it, is a true masterpiece that is ready for you to drive.

This Maserati Spyder is a very special rarity, as only 124 examples were produced. The car presented here also belongs to a series of no more than 12 one-offs, which feature the classic dashboard and the beautiful Jaeger instruments with chrome trim, making the car truly one of a kind.

In addition, this Maserati still has its original Maserati Mistral Spyder hardtop!

The original hardtop has been painstakingly restored by us and now shines in new splendour with a new headliner and its original black paintwork.

The full power and splendour of the FRUA design only comes into its own through the interplay as a Spyder and as a “Coupe” with hardtop.

One Maserati, two very different appearances.

This Maserati Mistral Spyder, with chassis number AM109/S*101*, is an Italian vehicle.

It was delivered in August 1965 to the owner of Sport Auto Roma SRL in Via Ruggero Giovanelli 2 in Rome. Owned by Dario Ravani Roadster Srl Soresina in 1990, the Maserati was sold to a dentist from Castelfranco in October 1991, who drove the car for 22 years.

In December 1994, it was homologated and awarded the ASI Gold badge by the Automobile Club Italia with the Certificato 8889. From 2004 to 2005, the vehicle was part of the “Museo Dell’Automobile” exhibition in Italy. In June 2013, the Maserati Mistral Spyder was inspected by Maserati specialist Leo Peschl and subsequently purchased by the current owner. After registration in Germany, initial technical work was carried out by Peschl and the vehicle took part in various classic car events.

In 2020, the decision was made to have this Maserati Mistral Spyder restored from the ground up at Scuderia Azzurra to bring it back to concours condition.

This extensive restoration was completed in January 2024.

So this Maserati Mistral Spyder was recently restored with great attention to detail by Scuderia Azzurra in around 4,000 hours of work.

With the intensive “frame-off” restoration, the workshop stands for excellent craftsmanship, which is reflected in both the aesthetics and the high quality of the restoration.

The engine, transmission and the entire technology of the car were also completely overhauled.

As a consequence, this Maserati Mistral Spider has a warranty of 12 months from purchase.

The classic Maserati colour “Grigio Flemington” with the interior in leather with the colour “Nero” make the car a true classic of Italian luxury cars.

All Maserati certificates are present, as well as a new MOT (technical control).

After the restoration and engine overhaul, the car has been professionally run in for 700 kilometres. It is now waiting to be presented regularly by its new owner.

This Maserati Mistral Spyder has been completely rebuilt without any compromises, with the highest effort and level of detail.

It is a completely corrosion-free vehicle that has been restored and rebuilt to the most modern standards.

Which makes this Maserati undoubtedly one of the best Mistral Spyders currently available on the market, on top with its beautiful hardtop.

Diana Ross
in ‘Sweet Summertime Livin’

The two-seater Maserati Mistral was presented to the public for the first time at the 1963 Turin Motor Show.

The Automobil Revue wrote at the time:
“The body of the new model is a masterpiece by Frua. It is reminiscent of the latter’s 5000 GT coupé and is one of the most beautiful cars shown at the Salon.”

Proud owners had to pay 5.7 million lire for the car.

A year later, in 1964, the Mistral Spyder was presented at the Geneva Motor Show.

The convertible was mostly steel with an aluminium bonnet, doors and boot lid. A very rare optional hardtop was also made of aluminium.

The editor-in-chief of Auto Motor und Sport wrote at the time:

“The standard Maserati 3.500 coupes and convertibles appear visually a little outdated due to their too high beltline. All the more successful is the Maserati Mistral with its sloping rear, bodywork by Frua – undoubtedly one of the most beautiful and interesting cars at the show.”

The engine was initially the 3.5-litre in-line six-cylinder with Lucas injection and 3485 cm3 displacement. This engine, equipped with two overhead camshafts, delivered around 220 hp at 5500 revolutions.

The factory quoted a top speed of 248 km/h for the 3.5-litre engine.

Road & Track commented:
“The Frua-bodied Maserati Convertible has a rear end that has similarities to the Lotus Elite or Elan, and a front end that looks completely unique. Overall it is a very pretty looking car, simple, elegant and as a whole indicative of good taste.”

Only 124 Mistral Spyders were built from 1964 to 1969.

Of these, only 12 were early cars with the 3.5 litre engine and the wonderful “Jaeger” dashboard.

The Maserati Mistral is considered one of Pietro Frua’s most beautiful designs.

Due to its timeless design and low production numbers, the Mistral Spyder is one of the rarest and most sought-after classic Maserati models.
