MASERATI GHIBLI 4.7 L

Maserati Ghibli tailored to your preferences - Concours d'Élegance Restoration

Maserati Ghibli 4.7 – Early Series | Model Year 1968

A Gran Turismo that became a legend

When Maserati unveiled the Ghibli at the 1966 Turin Motor Show, the model instantly redefined the image of the Italian high-performance Gran Turismo. Designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro during his time at Ghia, the Ghibli combined uncompromising performance with a low, elegant silhouette that is still regarded today as one of the most beautiful coupé designs in automotive history.

The name “Ghibli”, derived from the hot desert wind of North Africa, was perfectly chosen: powerful, fast and uncompromising. Beneath the long bonnet worked Maserati’s legendary V8 engine, derived from the brand’s racing experience, making the Ghibli one of the fastest production cars of its era – while at the same time a refined long-distance Gran Turismo of exceptional elegance.

This vehicle

The Maserati Ghibli offered here is a highly desirable early series example, equipped with the 4.7-litre V8 engine. The car was completed in March 1968 and delivered new to Sport Auto Roma, a dealer closely associated with Maserati’s sporting history.

It is a fully matching-numbers car, with its originality and history documented by official Maserati certificates. Despite being an early series example, this Ghibli is already fitted with four ventilated disc brakes, an important technical feature introduced during later development stages.

The car is currently in a condition that allows it to be restored entirely according to the personal preferences of its future owner. Exterior colour, interior trim and optional equipment can be freely specified. Both technically and structurally, the vehicle is already prepared to a level that allows completion within approximately six months from commissioning.

Particularly noteworthy are the original Campagnolo magnesium wheels as well as the original factory air conditioning, which will be completely overhauled by us during the restoration process. Optional features such as switchable power steering or a period-style radio with discreet Bluetooth technology can be integrated, always with the utmost respect for the car’s originality.

This Ghibli combines the purity and elegance of the early series with the standards of a no-compromise Scuderia Azzurra restoration – a car for connoisseurs who are not simply looking for an exceptional automobile, but who wish to actively shape their Maserati to their own vision.

Maserati Ghibli – A design icon of its era

The Maserati Ghibli (AM115) is universally regarded as one of the great style icons of the 1960s. Its bold and progressive design, penned by Giorgetto Giugiaro during his time as chief designer at Carrozzeria Ghia, proved highly influential and set new standards for high-performance Gran Turismo cars.

Introduced at the 1966 Turin Motor Show, the Ghibli captivated press and public alike. Its long bonnet, clean surfaces, distinctive hidden headlamps and dynamic proportions gave the car a powerful visual presence – a silhouette often likened to that of a shark, both elegant and predatory.

Demand for the Ghibli exceeded Maserati’s original expectations, resulting in a total production of just over 1,100 examples. Contemporary automotive journalists described it as a “prestige car” with a “sensational design”. Many owners opted for metallic paint finishes, which further accentuated the striking lines of Giugiaro’s design.

Beyond its technical excellence, the Ghibli quickly became a symbol of style and success. Its exclusivity and unmistakable appearance made it particularly popular among prominent personalities. Famous owners included Jean-Paul Belmondo, Sammy Davis Jr., Peter Sellers and Henry Ford II.

The Ghibli also achieved lasting cinematic fame through its appearance in Jacques Deray’s 1969 film “La Piscine”. In an iconic scene, Alain Delon and Romy Schneider drive a Maserati Ghibli along the winding coastal roads of the Côte d’Azur – a moment that firmly anchored the car in the cultural memory of an era.
